Unforeseen Consequences of an Economic Blackout

February 28, 2025 marks the economic blackout initiative by The People's Union USA, a grass roots movement to show the power of the consumer to major brands like Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart.

This also includes Target, who has already seen store traffic drop nearly 10% after the company’s move to conclude its diversity-related goals and initiatives.

In looking at conversation around shopping at Target to fully understand the story, an interesting narrative emerged; People are starting to notice how much they have been buying and how much of that is…

well….not really necessary.

“You quickly realize you don’t need Amazon, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, or Best Buy to live. This changes the population’s mindset from unconscious spending to conscious. Make better more practical decisions.”

“I don’t miss Target as much as I thought I would. It was just a habit easily broken”

“It’s gonna be hard but it feels liberating too! This system of global corporate exploitation is killing is all (sic) and even killing the planet! I truly don’t need all the crap I buy at Target”

The American consumers currently questioning their buying habits are increasingly discussing their reasons to shop less. It’s important to wonder, is this a new mind shift? Reducing consumption, shopping local, emphasizing quality over quantity and simply spending less?

As Newton said, every action has an equal and opposite reaction, and for some big brands, it could be scrutiny in what we buy.
